Ybbs – Lapplander

This section of the Ybbs between Hollenstein and Opponitz has always been privately owned and is not accessible to the public.
The section is characterized by a unique population of grayling and brown trout. The reason for this is that this section is not or only gently fished (by tenants until now) and the pressure from bathers is also low (bathing ban due to protected area). Furthermore, the section offers a perfect spawning area, which reproduces. We manage this section gently and rely on cocconing to introduce large numbers of young fish into the natural habitat.

There are some deep pools, overgrown areas in slow sections and plenty of forage fish (alder, bullheads) for the brown trout.

The optimum water depth is 150-170cm at the Opponitz measuring point. Here you can fish with dry flies and light nymphs. If the water gets higher (rainfall), cloudy water comes with a delay of approx. 8-10 hours, then quickly becomes visible again and sinks again relatively quickly. If the clear water remains higher for a longer period of time, you can fish with heavy nymphs and streamers. Large dry flies also like to outwit larger brown trout in their shelters near the banks.

In the morning and evening hours, a large brown trout can also be caught in open water.

However, the area is a real grayling district with documented catches of up to 53 cm. The average is clearly in the 40cm region and we are always happy to see the occasional 2-3 year old offspring.

The area is not difficult to fish, but at low water (150-170cm measuring point Opponitz) it is better to be “invisible” – especially in the season from May to November. The crystal-clear Ybbs makes it possible to fish on sight with a dry fly. What could be nicer than activating a grayling from the bottom with a dry fly and then seeing the bite 1-2 meters later?

However, some of the fish are “invisible” – the coloration of the grayling adapts perfectly to the conditions and therefore blind casts are also a possibility with surprises.

They are not the “monster grayling” in terms of genetics as in other regions in Austria, but they are characterized by a slender body shape with wonderful spots. In this section, the density can still be rated as “very good”.

I offer guests of the lodge access to this stretch of water on 2 days a week (Tuesday and Thursday). Public day tickets are not available. This ensures peace and quiet on the water and limits access – which is necessary in the long term.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

This section of the Ybbs is one of the best in the upper Ybbs valley. I have been fishing the Ybbs (all areas from Waidhofen upwards) for over 30 years now and am always surprised at the quality. I am particularly impressed by the excellent grayling, but also by the presence of really large brown trout in this section. I have been documenting my catches on this section since 2023 and am happy to make them available. Please contact me if you have any questions.
